Estadio Azteca is a multi-purpose stadium located in Mexico City. It is the official home of football club, Club America and Cruz Azul. As for capacity, the stadium also is the home for the Mexico National football team. The stadium sits at an altitude of 2,200m above sea level. For me, there are several factors that making this stadium as one of the most famous and iconic stadium in world:
STADIUM CAPACITY
The Estadio Azteca currently has a official seats capacity of 87,523 making it the largest stadium in Mexico. However, what surprise me the most is the initial capacity of the stadium. This stadium was opened in 1966 with a capacity of 115,000 seats. For me, its a huge capacity and will offer a electric atmosphere when full. This is a big and monster place in my own eyes. Due to the safety measures, during 2000s the capacity has been brought back into around 100,000. Moving into the next decades, during 2016 the famous stadium underwent a large refurbishment including the addition of VIP facilities, which reduce the capacity into 84,000 seats.
"WORLD CUP STADIUM"
The Estadio Azteca stadium regarded as the iconic stadium in world because it is the only stadium that hosting two times FIFA World Cup Final in 1970 and 1986. That was special honored to the Azteca stadium to host the biggest sport event in planet. However, the status last until 2014 when the Maracana Stadium in Brazil join the privilege. But wait, eem for your info this Estadio Azteca is set to host the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and making it the only stadium to hosting the World Cup for the third times.
1970 FIFA World Cup |
1986 FIFA World Cup |
During a quarter finals FIFA World Cup 1986 between Argentina and England, that was an intense game. The match meeting the two giant with their rivalry. It was also a match which included two of the famous goals in football history, both scored by Diego Maradona. The first goal scored after 51minutes known as the Hand of God Goal where Maradona secretly scored by using his hand. His second goal comes four minutes after his first by saw him dribble past five England players and finally goalkeeper Peter Shilton, and become the The Goal Of Century. Argentina won the game and went to win the FIFA World Cup 1986 with a victory over West Germany in the final match. Maradona also won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tounament.
